Over the last few years, Performing Arts is increasingly being regarded as a career choice. What is yet to be established is how to succeed and excel in this avenue. The apparent reason for this is the flexibility of the definition of success in this field, but it might also be because we have not yet been able to define the parameters of processes and achievements in Performing Arts. Students and aspirants of a career in this field do not have set guidelines or a structured curriculum to follow unlike their peers in fields of Science or Business.
A survey by UNESCO concluded that more than 29.5 million jobs worldwide are created because of contribution of cultural and creative industries. Therefore, nurturing future artists is crucial to the economy at large. Opportunities in this field are immense; while some take up training the next generation of artists, others pursue a career in the Indian film and music industries, and few also venture into the cultural divisions of government services. Entering and excelling in all these jobs demands a certain level of discipline and skill.
Few crucial skills are essential to be a professional in this field:
Consistent practice
Consistent effort to hone your skills will improve your ability as an artist. Strict adherence to a practice regimen and professional learning through a systematic curriculum are somethings most artists rely on. With dedication and passion, continuous practice in the art form will not feel like a burden, but a necessary part of the process of learning.
Training the mind
Everything from learning choreography to knowing your chords requires a strong memory. There are many techniques that can help to retain more information. Also, taking care of your body and mind is also important.
At least 15 minutes of daily training, with specifically crafted games and exercises, can help you improve your memory.
Exercising the body
Any art form needs precision, a steady hand and superior hand-eye coordination. Even though hand-eye coordination is required for almost all tasks, artists must be better at it than the average crowd. This quality is not as reliable for all artists, especially as it tends to deteriorate with age. Regular physical exercise, practicing any sport or even playing video games can help practice and retain this skill.
Be open-minded
Artists are required to evolve with changing times and trends. They need to be flexible in their art and approach. Without this, their art might not resonate with the audience make it redundant. Creativity needs to be in cohesion with the environment. For instance, combining traditional classical music with a modern learning approach employs open-mindedness that cultivates a creative learning process. Exposure to varied art forms related to or different from your own also add to your creative process.
Artistic community
Art cannot take place in isolation. In this people-driven profession, aspiring artists need to acquire mentors, friends, audiences, and competition to perform and thrive in the field. Visibility and reach are crucial for artists; it helps them build an atmosphere of collaboration and inspiration to grow and keep learning. It also helps the artist reach the right audience and secure better opportunities for their career. If their art is not presented well to the right people, their career might not reach the level they are striving for.
These skills can help youngsters go through the everyday hustle of being an artist.
Reaching success will take a great deal of time and effort. Meanwhile, we can start defining every stage and process so that aspiring artists can get stability and clarity in pursuing this field.
