Terrorist strikes leave women in tears, JK admin busy with Women’s Day celebrations
3/14/2022 12:07:33 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 13: While a sudden spike in target killings in Kashmir has left bereaved families especially the women folk in a state of mourning, the J&K administration is busy celebrating “Women’s day.” While the International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8, the administration in Jammu and Kashmir, has stretched it to weeklong celebrations being hosted in the Union Territory.
On March 12 alone the administration held around half a dozen celebratory events in Kashmir, when the event had actually concluded four days ago. And the celebrations were extended when terror strikes have been on a deadly rise. As per official documents, “Celebratory function under International Women's Week held at Anantnag.” “The District Social Welfare Office Anantnag in collaboration with Mahila Shakti Kendra, Sakhi One Stop Centre and Humanity, the ultimate faith (NGO) today organised a celebratory function in connection with International Women's week 2022 with a campaign theme ‘Break the Bias’ at Town Hall, here,” the official handout said.
Another International Women’s Day event was held at Tangdar. “Continuing the celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD), a function was today organized by the Rural Development Department at Panchayat Ghar Khumriyal which saw participation of a large number of women from different walks of life,” an official handout said.
One such event was also held in Baramulla. “As part of celebration of Iconic Week of International Women’s Day being celebrated across the district, a daylong function was today organized at Dak Bungalow Baramulla wherein the entrepreneurial spirit of ‘Naye Bharat ki Nari’ was applauded and female entrepreneurs under SHG, UMEED and other allied Centrally Sponsored Schemes were felicitated.” But then, celebrations have been underway, when some woman is losing her husband, son, brother or father, in the spike of terror incidents. At least five women were widowed in the recent past. At least five persons have been killed including a jawan with Territorial Army, a CRPF Jawan and three members of Panchayats. A young girl was among two civilians who lost life in a grenade blast in Srinagar.
A senior official told the Early Times on the condition of anonymity that instead of focussing on beef up of the security grid, the Jammu and Kashmir government was giving a rosy picture of the “worsening situation.”
“The government should focus on the security deficit instead of giving a rosy picture of worsening situation through celebrations, musical concerts and dance shows,” the official added.
For the last several weeks, there has been a popular demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah should personally review the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and make the J&K government accountable.
The JK government, however, has been saying that situation was normal.
