Jammu brick-klins face closure threat, non-locals get freehand to run the show | Natives lose employment, Govt busy signing MoUs to facilitate outsiders | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 15: President of Jammu brick-klin association Vibishen Singh on Tuesday said that bricks from Punjab, Rajasthan and Harayana have flooded the markets in Jammu and Kashmir and “Brick Mafia” is calling the shots in the Union Territory. Talking to a local news channel Singh said, “We have met the top officials on two occasions. We were assured by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu that the issue will be resolved after we gave him a written representation that our industry is at the verge of the closure.” Singh said, “Brick Klin Act states that brick business can be carried out only by the people who are license holders and no one can join this industry without license. But the bricks which are arriving in J&K from other states are being sold by the people who are not license holders.” He said, “Bricks manufactured in Jammu weigh around 3.5 kgs while the bricks that are arriving from other states are not more than 2.5 kgs. Entire Jammu has been built by the bricks that were produced in Jammu but during the past 2-years this industry has witnessed losses due to “Brick Mafia” entering into J&K.” He said, “Diwedi Sahib (Principal Secretary) told Div Com Jammu that we have to promote J&K industry and the intrusions from other states should stop.” “For starting a brick-klin one needs Rs 5 crore to Rs 7 crore in J&K and needs a license. But now the people transfer Rs 1 lakh to Punjab and get the bricks from there and sell it on the roads. If the same trend continues more than 250 brick-klins can face closure threat. One brick-klin employees around 100 people, so you can calculate how many people will lose their jobs,” he added. Singh said, “It’s unfortunate that instead of creating new job opportunities the government is snatching whatever we had.” |
