Amid Punjab Govt.’s decision to confirm casual employees, daily wagers in JK stare at bleak future | The tale of two cities ! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 23: At the time when the Aap Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has ordered regularization of more than 35 thousand casual employees, the daily wagers here of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir are staring at the bleak future with no wages and no traces of any confirmation even rendering service for decades together. As per the reports, on March 22, this year, the AAP government which is less than a month old said that it has started the process of making the jobs of 35,000 group C and D employees permanent. Earlier the government used to hire these employees on a contractual basis but now as per the announcement of Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Secretary of the state has been asked to put an end to contractual and outsourcing recruitments. The decision comes a day after the first cabinet meet after which the Punjab CM promised to fill 25,000 posts in the government of Punjab. Meanwhile, as far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned the administration here in spite of making tall claims of pro-people measures is not even moving an inch closer to confirming the daily rated workers who were promised by the past cabinet to be regularized in a phased manner. Pertinently, there are more than 60 thousand daily-wagers working amid the trying circumstances on meager wages for decades and there is no official word pertaining to the confirmation of their services in the government. These ill- fated workers are being denied their wages even for months all together and we have seen the heart wrenching pictures of the children of these workers protesting at various places, holding placards in their toddler hands, wanting government to listen to their plight and address it on humanitarian grounds. Ironically, even the wages disbursed in their favour are too meager to even cover the basic living costs for them. In the prevalent situation when cost of living has drastically surged, these workers are paid Rs 225/- per day. It doesn’t even sum up to Rs 6000/ a month. It is worth to mention that various state governments and union territories have implemented minimum wage act in their respective states and UTs. Recently, national capital territory (NCT) of Delhi has revised the minimum wages rates in scheduled employments under the minimum wages act,1948 in the national capital territory (NCT) of Delhi . As per the notification, the non- matriculates workers are paid a minimum Rs 675/- per month. Workers with above Matric qualification are paid Rs 752/- per month while as Graduates are paid Rs 807/- per month. |
