Areas with smart meters still not curtailment free | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 24: While speaking at an event held at Convention Centre, Jammu last month, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had said that the areas being installed with smart meters will be made curtailment free along with supply of quality power to the end user. In his appeal to people, the Lt Governor said, “I appeal to the people to install smart meters and help the administration in controlling theft and reducing wasteful consumption.” However, Sinha’s announcement is quite contrary to what really is happening in areas of Jammu city where smart electricity meters were installed and made operationalized. Since the city is in the midst of a severe power crisis even the localities equipped with smart meters are experiencing frequent power cuts and yet not are curtailment free. “The administration has failed to ensure regular and uninterrupted power supply in the localities where smart meters have been installed and made operational. The claims of supplying 24x7 non-stop electricity falls flat with regular and unscheduled power cuts during this scorching heat,” said a resident. “The vision of availing uninterrupted power supply through the medium of smart meters remained a dream only that too a bad one. Households in J&K will be getting uninterrupted power supply is a farce. The residents have to wait for some more time to get it realized,” he added. It is worthwhile to mention here that in the first phase, 6603 smart meter households were connected to 4 feeders of Jammu last month with an assurance that these residences would receive quality electricity but in the ongoing severe power shortage even these homes are bearing the brunt of frequent electricity cuts. |
