Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 24: In a development, which has left the industrialists of Jammu and Kashmir shocked, a former lawmaker said that the Power Development Department was likely to overcome prevalent “power crises even” even if it means “temporarily shutting down some industries” in the Union Territory.
Sharing a picture of his meeting with a top official of the PDD, former lawmaker Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar said the government was exploring the option of shutting down industries to overcome shortage of power.
“Power problem will be solved within 2-3 days even if we have to close the industrial units during the Ramadan Days. Called on XXX(name withheld) expressed concern over frequent power cuts in holy month of Ramadan…” said the lawmaker while tagging the official on Twitter.
The tweet drew severe response from the business fraternity with the industrialists saying how can the administration even think of closing down such a vital sector of economic activity. The business community accused the Jammu and Kashmir administration of making a mockery of the system by being “so insensitive towards the problems faced by the people in general and the business community in particular due to the irritating power cuts.” “Industrial sector is already at the verge of the closure due to worst ever power crises now such ridiculous statements are coming which are even not being refuted by those at the helm,” the business community said.
Even though the senior official of the PDD was formally tagged in the controversial tweet by the former MLA, the government hasn’t clarified about the issue.
But officials in the PDD said there was a possibility that the administration could “restrict power supplies to some business sectors in a bid to overcome the shortfall of energy.” The officials said nothing could be said at the moment with accuracy as “boss has not negated the claim made by the former MLA who had met him.” Despite repeated attempts the official in question couldn’t be contacted for comments.
