JAMMU, May 13: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and HDFC Bank for the establishment of Swachh Material Recycling Centre in Jammu. The foundation stone will be laid by Chander Mohan Gupta, Mayor, JMC on May 16 in Jammu. Moreover, HDFC Bank and CEE in partnership with JMC & Regional and Urban Development Agency (RUDA), launched ‘Plastic Lao, Thaila/Mask Pao’ stall- Collection & Drop Point for Non-Biodegradable & Recycling Plastic Waste at Ward 56, Gangyal Mandir near Pulli, where citizens can dropped off their plastic waste in exchange for masks and cloth bags (Thaila). The campaign’s objective is to reinforce the value of plastics and urge citizens to integrate the principles of reduce, reuse, refill, refurbish, recover, and recycle plastics into their daily lives. The campaign also aims to increase citizen engagement in the waste value chain by reducing the use of single-use plastics, segregation at home, using their own cloth bags as well as the appropriate bins, among other things. Mayor, JMC, said, “This is an appeal to the visitors, shopkeepers, and residents of Jammu to reduce single-use plastic in their everyday lives to achieve the aim of being plastic-free. We urge people to join these initiatives by segregating waste at home, using bins in public places, and carrying their own cloth bags to reduce the use of plastic”. Rahul Yadav, Commissioner, JMC also urged the people to stop using single-use plastic, as it has an adverse effect on the environment and human life. He encouraged everyone; schools, institutions, market association and others to actively participate in this campaign as it is the need of the hour to manage plastic waste properly. |
