Int'l Plastic Free Day: PCC organises awareness workshop n PG College Rajouri | | | Early Times Report RAJOURI, May 25: Intending to raise awareness about the hazardous effects of plastic on the environment, the Pollution Control Committee on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Vikas Kundal today organised an awareness workshop here in the Government Post Graduate College. International Plastic Free day is observed on 25th May every year to draw public attention towards its hazardous impact on the environment. A number of speakers highlighted the significance of the day and made the participants aware about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and motivated them to go for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Addressing the event, the DO PCB, Anupam Koul said that the day was all about promoting environmental conservation by encouraging people to stay away from the use of plastic bags and instead look for more eco-friendly alternatives. He also said that over 380 million tons of plastic is produced every year and half of all plastic produced is single use 'meaning it's thrown away after just one use and since only 9% of all plastic gets recycled, most of it ends up littering our communities, filling our landfills, and polluting our oceans.' Highlighting the harmful effects of plastic on lives and environment, he said that plastic takes the lives of millions of animals, including birds, fish and other marine organisms. He also appealed to the students to act as messengers for disseminating information among the masses about the harmful effects of the plastic on the environment and also motivate them to go for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. |
