Working President of Association Kulbhushan Khajuria speaking on the on the occasion appealed Government to talk with neighbouring States heads of Haryana and Punjab for lifting the ban on the dry fodder, otherwise the prices of dry fodder would be increased many folds in coming days which will definitely hit the dairy farming of the Union Territory. He said dairy farming sector can be a profitable venture among the youth if more and more start-ups and dairy units get government-sponsored initiatives and incentives. Khajuria said dairy farming has a lot of promise for the Animal Husbandry sector, notably dairy farming, because of its favorable climate and soil and it is motivating a lot of individuals to practice dairy farming. He said livestock is emerging as an important sector in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir and plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. Dairying has a potential source of additional income for the rural people of Jammu and Kashmir, added Khajuria. Chib in his address maintained that there have been a lot of challenges in this sector, adding that the need of the hour is to work out on all the modalities and trying to prepare a roadmap to help the dairy farmers and others associated with this sector. In this regard he said for improving milk production and productivity govt should think of various interventions including genetic up-gradation of Cattle, Cattle Induction, Fodder Development, Milk Procurement and Processing and Health Cover and Risk Management. Chib further said that in order to make milk production profitable for farmers, there was a need for establishing Cooperatives to supply it directly to consumers besides working out all the modalities to find a suitable market for the farmers and dairy unit holders,” he said. The dairy-farming has a potential to generate jobs for thousands of unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir provided Government’s priority should be to promote local milk-processing units. Chib observed that Milk production rises during crop failures due to natural calamities because farmers bank more on animal husbandry then. However, given the nature of production and sale of milk in India, milk producers are highly susceptible to even minor shocks as the demand for milk and milk products are sensitive to changes in the employment and income of consumers. Government must do more to help as dairy farmers need a stable market and better pricing for liquid milk, affordable, uninterrupted supply of feed and reliable veterinary services, added Chib. |
