Despite CAG’s direction audit meetings not held regularly | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 26: Despite repeated instructions by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, the Jammu and Kashmir government has failed to conduct regular meetings of audit committees to ensure transparency of utilization of funds. Due to the failure of the administration to ensure regular meetings of committees, teams always find it difficult to conduct audits of different departments from time to time. Conveying serious concern over unexpected and dilly-dallying response of the departments to the Inspection Reports and other findings, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has asked the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to ensure regular meetings of Audit Committees to monitor the progress and for strict compliance of the rules and procedures. The Principal Accountant General (Audit), Jammu and Kashmir usually conduct periodic inspections of all government departments to verify accounts and other records. These inspections are followed up with the Inspection Reports (IRs) incorporating findings, which are issued to the Heads of the offices inspected with copies to the next higher authorities for taking prompt corrective action. The CAG in its report last year pointed out that various departments of the J&K government have failed to conduct regular meetings of audit committees. The CAG had recommended that the Government should advise the concerned departments to hold Audit Committee meetings frequently at least three meetings in a quarter to monitor the progress. Reports said that despite directions by the CAG various government departments have failed to conduct these meetings. |
