Need collective effort | | | Arrival of COVID-19 in 2020 pushed the people across the world into depression and made them anxious. The pandemic made things worse for the patients suffering from different mental ailments. It added to the stress, anxiety and depression. According to a survey carried out by the doctors in 2022, about 16% children were found to be suffering from anxiety and depression in Jammu and Kashmir. The adults too were found sailing in the same boat. Mental ailments have always remained a significant health problem particularly in adolescence, but the unique challenges posed by the pandemic added to the woes of the people. An international study has revealed that people in 204 countries across the world suffer from depressive and anxiety disorders. These ailments increased by about 35 per cent during the pandemic. The COVID-19 has waned off. It’s high time to address these issues. Experts have repeatedly said that there is a manifold increase in mental health cases and if no attention is paid these could assume an alarming proportion. Restrictions have gone. People don’t have to remain in isolation anymore. They are free to interact and socialize. The fear that one human may get infected by coming in contact with another human being is no more prevalent. People have resumed their normal chores. Despite lives becoming normal the depression cases are on rise. There has been increase in the number of suicide cases. The youngsters taking refuge in substance abuse is a big concern. Society needs to understand that the people having mental issues not only face the public stigma which is the reaction that the general population has towards them but also self-stigma which is defined as prejudice which they turn against themselves. People need to understand that they have to lend a helping hand to the patients suffering from anxiety and depression. The charity has to begin from home. Parents have to ensure that they talk to their children, especially teenage boys and girls as they need guidance and help at this stage of their lives. Their hands have to be held so that they don’t fall into depression or anxiety. Collective effort is needed to keep people happy and content. Depression and anxiety can emerge as monsters and eat up the entire society. They have to be nipped in the bud. |
