Change: Srinagar hosts G20 meeting, life remains normal across Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 22: Shops and business establishments remained open in Srinagar and traffic plied normally on Monday- the day when foreign delegates arrived in Kashmir for the three day G20 Meeting , officials said. This is unlike in the past when life used to get hit during such high profile events. On Sunday while Kashmiri separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conferences said the events like G20 will not “change the reality” on ground, the group did not call for any shutdown. On Monday life was normal across Kashmir and government offices worked as usual. The shops and business establishments remained open in the entire city. However, some schools in Srinagar and Budgam were closed as a precautionary measure as the G20 delegates are scheduled to visit several places during their stay in Srinagar. Officials said no traffic movement was allowed on Srinagar’s Boulevard Road- which leads to the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex (SKICC)- the main venue for the G20 Meeting. There are also traffic restrictions on the routes used by G20 delegates. Reports of normal life being observed with shops and business establishments open and schools functioning normally were also received from all district headquarters of the Kashmir valley. Thousands of security men from the J&K Police, Army and its forces, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Border Security Force (BSF) have been maintaining a tight vigil across Srinagar to ensure the first major international event in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019 passes off peacefully. |
