Power war: Councilors, officials lock horns | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 29: During the past few days councilors and officials have been in the news for the wrong reasons in Kashmir. Recently councilors at Baramulla Municipal Council allegedly abused the employees and officials, the Assistant Executive Engineer, R&B on Wednesday accused a Sopore councilor of hurling invectives at him. After the incident the official went on a protest leave and demanded the intervention of the higher-ups. The councilor on the other hand said the official also abused and threatened him and that he too has filed an application in the police station. An observer while talking to Early Times said, “The councilors locking horns with the officials is an indication that there is a power war going on between them.” He said, “Such incidents can take an ugly turn and hamper the development works. Higher ups need to take a note and intervene. Such incidents need to be prevented.” An official said that these two incidents have come to fore but many are not reported. “The councilors have started taking officials for granted. They need to behave properly,” he added. However, a councilor said, “Officials don’t listen to us. Whenever we approach them with any public grievance they just brush it off on one or other pretext.” He alleged that the councilors are being ignored and are not getting the “respect” they should get as public representatives. “The development works are started in our areas without us being informed. We should be taken in loop before any work is taken up,” he added. According to the insiders the councilors are facing resentment in their areas as they are reportedly compelling the officials to carry out the development in selected areas only and “whenever officials try to carry out the development on equitable basis they face a difficult situation.” |
