Mehbooba opposes Farooq’s stand on ‘no-dialogue with Pak’ | Gagangeer Terror Attack Fallout | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 23: Three days after the National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah opposed dialogue with Pakistan after the Gagangeer terror attack, Peoples’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti supported talks with the neighbouring country to restore lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized the urgent need for reconciliation between India and Pakistan, asserting that such a step is crucial to ending hostility and preventing further tragedies like the recent Gagangir terror attack. Speaking to reporters after visiting the family of a slain doctor in Budgam, who was among the victims of the Gagangir attack, Mufti extended her condolences and expressed grave concern over the persistent violence in Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized that the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan continues to disproportionately harm the people of the region. “Incidents like Gagangir will keep happening unless there is reconciliation between the two nations,” Mufti cautioned. She referred to the period of diplomatic outreach under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, highlighting the significant efforts made during that time to ease tensions between the neighboring countries. On Monday Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Monday said that dialogue with Pakistan is not possible until it stops terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Dr Abdullah emphasized that "terror and talks cannot go simultaneously." He stressed that such attacks hinder efforts to improve Indo-Pak relations. Abdullah asserted, “Kashmir will not become Pakistan,” urging Pakistan's leadership to end terrorism for better ties with India. He warned Pakistan that its actions would have "severe results" and emphasized India's resolve to curb terrorism. NC chief declared that “Kashmir will never become Pakistan,” and warned that such an incident would deteriorate relations between two countries. In the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, the question of engaging with Pakistan continues to stir intense debate. Two of the region’s prominent political figures, Farooq Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference (NC), and Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), have once again expressed opposing views on the issue, underscoring the deep divide within the political approach to addressing Kashmir’s complexities. Farooq Abdullah, a veteran politician and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has taken a firm stance against holding talks with Pakistan at this juncture. On the other hand, Mehbooba Mufti, also a former Chief Minister and a vocal advocate of dialogue, holds a completely different perspective. She has consistently called for reopening diplomatic channels with Pakistan, viewing dialogue as a critical step toward resolving long-standing tensions in the region. Mehbooba argues that Kashmir's unique geopolitical context necessitates engagement with all stakeholders, including Pakistan, to achieve lasting peace. |
