Reviving Mughal Road
3/24/2025 11:29:56 PM
The Jammu and Kashmir government is making a concerted push to develop tourism-related infrastructure along the historic Mughal Road, a scenic corridor that connects Poonch and Rajouri with south Kashmir’s Shopian.
This initiative aims to unlock the region’s untapped tourism potential by creating world-class facilities at Dubjan, Mughal Sarai, Peer-ki-Gali, and Shakroo Keller—locations renowned for their breathtaking landscapes and natural beauty.
The Mughal Road, a historic passage has remained an underutilized asset despite its immense tourism prospects. The J&K administration’s renewed focus on infrastructure development along this route reflects a visionary approach toward sustainable tourism, economic growth, and regional connectivity.
The government’s plan encompasses the construction of high-quality accommodations, eco-friendly tourist huts, way-side amenities, and improved road infrastructure. In Dubjan, known for its lush green meadows and tranquil environment, new eco-tourism facilities will be established to attract nature lovers and adventure seekers.
At Peer-ki-Gali, one of the highest points along the Mughal Road, the administration plans to set up viewing decks and rest areas to offer travelers a breathtaking panoramic experience of the Pir Panjal range.
Similarly, Mughal Sarai—an important historical stop along the route—is set to be revived as a cultural and heritage tourism site. Restoration efforts will highlight its historical significance, offering visitors an immersive journey into the region’s past.
Shakroo Keller, with its untouched meadows and serene surroundings, is also on the development radar, with provisions for trekking routes, camping sites, and adventure sports facilities.
The tourism development plans are expected to significantly boost the local economy by generating employment opportunities for residents. The hospitality and service sectors will experience a surge in demand, leading to job creation for local artisans, transport operators, and entrepreneurs. Moreover, the influx of tourists will encourage the growth of small businesses, such as homestays, handicraft stores, and food outlets, contributing to the overall economic prosperity of the region.
A key challenge in unlocking the full potential of the Mughal Road as a tourism hub has been its seasonal accessibility. Heavy snowfall during winter months often renders the road impassable.
The planned development of tourism infrastructure along the Mughal Road marks a transformative step in J&K’s tourism landscape. By leveraging the region’s natural beauty, historical significance, and adventure tourism potential, the government is setting the stage for a thriving tourism industry. If executed with a balance of economic, environmental, and cultural considerations, this initiative will undoubtedly make the Mughal Road a premier tourist destination, bringing prosperity and recognition to the picturesque regions of Poonch, Rajouri, and Shopian.
