Bridge of opportunity, unity

The Jammu Division of the Northern Railway is set to launch the inaugural Vande Bharat special train service between Jammu and Srinagar on April 30. The direct train between the two capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir regions will reduce the travel time and boost tourism, besides providing an all-weather surface transport link.
The train will mark the introduction of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express on this strategically significant route, enhancing seamless travel across the region’s challenging terrain.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off a 20-coach Vande Bharat Express train between Jammu and Srinagar on April 30, while the services for the general public will commence on May 2.
Pertinently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first direct train service between Katra and Srinagar on June 6, 2025. This service is now being extended up to the Jammu Tawi Railway station.
For decades, travel between Jammu and Srinagar has been dependent largely on the national highway, a route often disrupted by landslides, snowfall, road damage, and weather-related closures. These interruptions have not only caused inconvenience to commuters but have also impacted trade, tourism, and emergency movement. The extension of the Vande Bharat Express from Katra to Jammu Tawi now provides an all-weather surface transport link that can significantly reduce such hardships. Reliable rail connectivity across seasons is a long-awaited relief for the people of the region.
The strategic importance of this rail link cannot be overlooked. Connectivity in a sensitive border region is essential not only for development but also for national integration and security preparedness. Improved transport infrastructure strengthens supply chains, enables faster movement, and brings remote regions closer to the mainstream. It sends a clear message that development is the strongest answer to isolation and underdevelopment.
The Vande Bharat train itself symbolizes modern India’s technological confidence. Designed for speed, comfort, and efficiency, it represents the rapid modernization of Indian Railways. Bringing such a premium service to Jammu and Kashmir reflects the Centre’s commitment to ensuring that the region shares fully in national progress.
The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is not merely a train—it is a bridge of opportunity, unity, and hope. It carries with it the promise of smoother journeys, stronger economies, and a more connected future for Jammu and Kashmir.
