Srinagar on red-alert as security forces apprehend militant attack

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 14: Ahead of the Independence Day, a red alert has been sounded in the summer capital, which will host the main function of the celebrations in the state.
While Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti is scheduled to take guard of honor at the Independence Day celebrations at Bakshi Stadium, the main venue for the event here, the security has been heightened.
Sources said the government had inputs that militant groups were desperate to execute attacks on August 15 to make their presence felt.
Official sources said Lashkar -e-Taiba and the Hizbul Mujahideen were trying to target security installations. While the security on the Srinagar Jammu highway has been heightened, the deployment has been beefed up elsewhere, particularly in the summer capital.
While curfew has been clamped in the Valley, police said the restrictions would not only prevent protests but also keep check on any militant movement.
While roads leading to the City and inside have been sealed for any civilian movement, a three-tier security is place in and around the Bakshi Stadium.
For the first time, the commandoes are being positioned on the under construction Jahangir Chowk- Ram Bagh flyover, officials said.
Sharpshooters have equally taken position at advantageous locations over the high-rise buildings, including flyover in the area, while roads leading to the venue have been sealed for any civilian movement.
A police official said unlike the previous years the function this year would be comparatively low key. "The number of itinerates for the event are much lesser as compared to the previous years," he said.
A senior official of the Education Department said despite strict instructions from the Education Minister Naeem Akhter to rope in more and more schoolchildren for participation in the Independence Day, the turnout has been thin.
Meanwhile the identity cards of government servants will be treated as curfew passes as they have been asked to attend the function at the Bakshi Stadium.
