Jammu, Aug 16: On the occasion of India's 70th Independence day, a Van Mahotsav was organized today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Kakryal Katra wherein saplings of about 70 medicinal and herbal plants were planted by the University staff and an environment NGO Van Sampda Jammu. All staff and their family members took part in the plantation program-me which will be continued for one week till 21st August 2016. Members of Indian Voluntary Foundation also participated in the plantation of species belonging to Ashawgandha, Sukhc-hain, Arjun, Tikoma, bahunia verigeta, Phalsa and Molsary. Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chairman of the University Prof Sanjeev Jain emphasized each one for making it a habit to plant a tree. He was all praise for the members of Van Sampda and IVF for undertaking this noble gesture on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations in the campus. General Secretary of the NGO Devendra Sharma thanked the university officials for allowing them to coincide the plantation work with Independence Day celebrations and briefed the importance of plantation which is a free source of life saving oxygen for everyone. Notable among those present were Registrar of the SMVDU Ajay Khajuria, Lalit Kumar, Anil Gaind, Kiran Kumar, Prof Varun Tripathi, Prof Jugal Kishore of NSS unit SMVDU.
