Tension grips Mandi | | | Early Times Report
Poonch, Aug 16: Tension gripped Mandi town on Tuesday after some local youth raised 'objectionable' slogans following a clash with pilgrims. Reacting to the religious slogans by pilgrims, local youth also raised 'objectionable' slogans. The wind screens of some vehicles were also broken by the miscreants. Sources said Chhari Mubarak (holy mace of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati) was accorded a warm welcome by the local Muslims when it reached Buddha Amarnath shrine at Mandi from Poonch town around noon. Trouble erupted after some pilgrims raised religious slogans. While some elderly people tried to stop the agitated youth of the community, they did not listen to them and allegedly raised anti-national slogans. As tempers rose, the two sides also had a scuffle. The situation was, however, saved from worsening by the timely intervention of police and CRPF. Senior civil and police officers rushed to Mandi and held a meeting with local people to defuse the situation. Some local youth were also alleged to have manhandled a senior police officer after the latter allegedly slapped one of them. |
