Mendhar faces acute water scarcity, 80 hand pumps, 24 WSS’ run defunct

Poonch, Nov 30: The border district of Poonch in general and particularly Mendhar has been witnessing drinking water scarcity since long as 80 hand pumps and 24 water supply schemes (WSS) have been found defunct resulting acute shortage of drinking water in tehsil Mendhar and its peripheral locations.
"At one hand the local are depending upon unhygienic water from traditional water resources on the other hand the concerned authorities seems to be in deep slumber as they seemed reluctant to resolve the crisis," some local in Mendhar alleged here today.
They said, " as per local reports the Mendhar Tehsil is worst hit as people in more than 35 villages prominently Balakote Mohalla Kallar, Gursai Upper, Kalaban Top, Ghani and Dharama besides Surankote and Mandi Tehsils are facing lots of difficulties to fetch drinking water from traditional water resources after covering long distances on foot to fetch a pail of water."
Highlighting their miseries, they said that there is need of atleast ten water tankers to maintain regular water supply but the department has only two to cater the need of over 2.5 lakh people of the area.
Official sources on anonymity told Early Times, that around 24 Water Supply Schemes (WSS) are lying defunct since 2009. "They have been put into cold storage as there were no funds available to implement them and the situation turned as from pan to fire when 80 hands pumps also went out of order due to official apathy of ground water wing of PHE department, they lamented.
Locals further alleged that PHE department even has failed to check the snags developed by these pumps reasosn better known to the officials at the helms of affairs . Talking to Early Times, AEE Sub Division PHE Mendhar Israr Khan said whenever funds were made available we surely will make the schemes functional. "The department need atleast Rs 40 crore to restore the water supply to the worst hit areas but due to non availability of funds the crisis still continues, Khan showing his helplessness lamented.
