Jammu, Apr 1: The Sub standard work executed by the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF), a central agency on Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway stands exposed as the retention wall meant for the protection of 5 KM newly constructed road stretch at Pul Doda stands collapsed.
The collapse has subjected the people to inconvenience and hindred vehicular movement. This newly created road stretch was constructed by the GREF department at the cost of over Rs. 20 crore after the main Pul Doda road got submerged in the reservoir of 450 MW Baghlair power project.
Though the local experts in the field of the Engineering raised objection over the alignment of the said road stretch and declared it as unsafe, but the GREF authorities not only went ahead with the construction plan, but also used sub standard material particularly in construction of retention walls.
The locals allege that the GREF officials at the helm of the affairs from time to time use material like crasher sand mixed with mud in construction work.
Although traffic has been diverted on newly under construction road link to resume transport service in between Doda and Batote, but the risk of accidents and trembling down of the remaining portion of the road continue to hunt the thousands of passengers travelling on road every day.
The stranded passengers who were trapped on this road today for several hours were up in arms against GREF authorities for causing hardships to the people travelling on this vital road and demanded action against the guilty persons involved behind execution of sub stand work.
Similar is the case with newly constructed road stretch at Assar where the GREF authorities too use substandard material in construct work. This road stretch was constructed by GREF in the year 2009 after 500 meter road stretch sink in the year 2009 due impact of water reservoir of Baghliar Power Project. Like in previous case over 20 crore rupees were spent on this road stretch.
When contacted SSP National Highway Dr. Haseeb Mughal said that the traffic was restored on Batote-Doda road stretch after clearing the massive landslide at Raggi Nallah. He said that this 50 Kilometer stretch of National Highway is vulnerable to the threat to human life as many hanging stones and rocks continuously threatening the stability of the road and can invite an accident any time and added that the same required proper and immediate attention. He said that on their part the matter was brought into the notice of concern agencies responsible for maintenance of the road.
He said that he personally inspect this 50 KM road stretch and said that there is need to look beyond left and right while traveling on this road. He said that concern agencies also need to look at other vulnerable sites with respect to sinking of land, hanging stones and rocks and added that in case of any laxity, the road will become more vulnerable for the traffic purpose. He said that after proper inspection of the road, he will submit a detail written report to the concern agency for immediate attention.
