PDP-BJP alliance in J&K? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 24: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is all set to ally with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form government in Jammu and Kashmir. And as and when the red carpet is rolled for swearing-in Mufti Mohammed Sayeed as 12th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, indications are that history would witness BJP, a party which has been deftly talking of revoking much abused Article 370, climbing down on this demand, talking about delimitation in muted voice, forgetting the demand for a Hindu Chief Minister, giving up on common civil code (CCC) and assuring of initiating a purposeful dialogue with Pakistan for complete peace on the volatile international border as well as the contentious Line of Control (LOC). Indications are also that BJP is likely to concede to most of the demands of PDP for government formation since it would be its first government with a Kashmir based party in Jammu and Kashmir after country's independence in 1947. More so, the swearing-in of a government supported by BJP would be fitting tribute to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, whom BJP venerates as its top ideologue on Kashmir and whose death anniversary is an occasion for renewing pledge for abrogating Article 370 of the Indian constitution for complete merger of J&K with rest of the country. Ram Madhav's election to the Rajya Sabha from J&K would mean BJP boosting of having formed its first democratically elected government in a Muslim majority state on the borders with Pakistan and then, elected two MPs to a house of the parliament with the support of 32 Muslims MLAs i.e. PDP 28 and other including Peoples Conference (PC). Alliance with PDP will force BJP to rethink about its policy at the national level vis-à-vis Muslims, which are still reluctant to come close to a party, which has been claiming of representing change and being Avtar of development and progress. Mufti Mohammed Sayeed knows well that Kashmir has a chance with Prime Minister Narinder Modi of realizing the long cherished dream of porous borders and cross-LOC trade, something Congress-led UPA talked about but failed to move beyond tokenism. Trade on LOC has failed to attract interest of big business houses and is merely a barter system, something which prevailed several hundred years ago and is of no economic consequence these days. UPA failed to take it forward and remained stuck up with mindless acts of terrorists. Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and even the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif knows well that Modi means business. He is unlikely to be cowed down by events on the LOC or on the international border once he decides to take up the cause with Pakistan. Mufti realises that Modi's decisions vis-à-vis Kashmir are unlikely to be questioned by people across the country since he continues to enjoy trust of the majority across the nation. And if the events across the LOC are not looked from the eyes of hawks wanting war, Nawaz Sharief and Narinder Modi have been exchanging gifts. So, Mufti's PDP can seek assurance from Modi's BJP for initiating dialogue with Pakistan, something which is already going on at the track-2 and track-3 levels. Jammu has overwhelmingly voted for BJP. The party has MLAs from all the districts of Jammu region. Erstwhile District Doda which is Muslim dominated has given 4 of the six seats to BJP while Rajouri and Poonch districts too have two BJP MLAs. Congress and NC also have managed to win seats in Jammu region but the overwhelming mandate is with BJP, something which cannot be ignored and something, which Mufti Mohammed Sayeed knows well. |
