Upset with state unit, Modi personally monitoring developments | Granting citizenship rights to WP refugees | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 1: Displeased over the manner in which state unit of BJP is accomplishing the vital assignment of granting citizenship rights to the west Pakistan refugees and thwarting separatists propaganda against it, PM Narendra Modi has reportedly taken control of the project personally. It is after PM's intervention that PDP softened its posture on this issue. PDP MP and one of the most important leaders of the party Muzaffar Beigh had told a local daily that the settlement of the WPR is a humanitarian issue. The PDP chief spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar had earlier said that it' was a complex issue but he didn't outrightly reject their settlement in the State. The National Conference continues to maintain tough posture on the issue and Speaker of the Assembly, Mubarak Gul had termed these refugees as guests of the State. Former Finance Minister AR Rather, who headed cabinet sub-committee, did not send his recommendations to the Centre, despite repeated reminders by the home ministry. However, Prime Minister Modi, who heads a majority government in the Centre and with his party likely to share power in the State, has made it clear that this issue can't be ignored any further. The fact that 80 percent of these WP refugees are Dalits, made it a humanitarian issues and political parties across the board would prevail upon state government to accept the recommendations of the JPC. "Modi had already sidelined and silenced the separatists. He is now taking them head on over this issue and will expose them internationally and will project it as violation of the human rights, which is very sensitive subject ," said a senior leader, wishing not to be quoted. |
