NC insiders blame Omar's coterie for defeat | Cong wants black sheep out | | Fazal Khan
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 1: The six year "misrule" of National Conference-Congress coming to an end in Jammu and Kashmir has opened a Pandora's box as many defeated leaders and ministers in both the parties are blaming their own men for the debacle. Sources told Early Times that a few top NC leaders who figured among the losers in the recent assembly elections are of the opinion that former chief minister Omar Abdullah dividing the NC into two camps proved disastrous for the party. "Omar remained surrounded by his yes-men and maintained a distance from the senior leaders. He (Omar) used to listen to the people around him and refrained from paying mush heed towards the suggestion of seniors," said a NC insider. He claimed Omar ignoring seniors and following the advice of his coterie created a wedge among the party leaders. "Experienced people had no say in the party affairs and major policy decisions of the government," the insider added. He said that Omar ignoring senior leaders encouraged his yes-men to hatch conspiracies against the party leaders. "People around Omar derived maximum mileage about them enjoying close proximity with the Chief Minister. They even used media to indulge in false propaganda against the senior NC leaders," the insider said. He said that a few influential men in Omar's coterie left no opportunity to ensure that senior party leaders remain in the news for wrong reasons. "To teach one senior NC leader a lesson a close aide of Omar Abdullah somehow managed to inform the reporters that the senior leader has purchased a property in a foreign country and is misusing his official position to help his son bag prestigious projects in Jammu and Kashmir," the insider revealed. He said soon after the news involving the senior NC leader and former minister appeared in media the leader approached the former chief minister Omar Abdullah with his resignation and even named the person who had brought disrepute to him. Sources said that after facing a humiliating defeat in Parliamentary as well as the assembly elections, National Conference leaders these days are discussing what went wrong. "Had Omar clipped the wings of people around him well in time party's tally would not have fallen to 15 seats. Omar taking every development in his stride and trusting people around him blindly spelled doom for National Conference and party suffered the worst defeat in the electoral history of Jammu and Kashmir," sources added. On the other hand NC's coalition partner Congress which just managed to get 12 seats in the last assembly polls too has zeroed on people within the party who damaged the party's cause. A senior Congress leader while talking to Early Times said, "Factionalism, infighting and intolerance devastated Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Party leaders left no opportunity to castigate each other. Congress ministers not remaining accessible to their own party workers and not paying much heed towards their constituencies made them unpopular among the masses," the leader added. He said Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be revived till stern action is taken against the black sheep present in the party. |
