Mirwaiz accepts realities, says consensus among all political parties is a must
Kashmir issue

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 14: Frustrated chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday accused the Congress and the Bharitiya Janata Party (BJP) of settling political scores with each other over what he called sufferings of Kashmiris.
"These political parties have been settling political scores with each other over sufferings of Kashmiris," Mirwaiz said addressing Friday congregation at the Jamia Masjid, Srinagar. What had made the Mirwaiz take on the Congress was its stand on the release of those booked under various charges, including the charge of sedition. "The Congress which has ruled India for majority of period since 1947 is responsible for creation of Kashmir issue. The posture of the Congress party over the issue of release of political prisoners in the Valley is condemnable. The Congress even secretly hanged Muhammad Afzal Guru to score political point over BJP.
The irony is that after being out of power, now some of the Congress leaders express resentment over Guru's hanging. This is sheer hypocrisy," he said. What he said should not surprise anyone. Indeed, the Congress is responsible for the whole mess in Kashmir, notwithstanding the fact that it acted wisely in the case of Afzal Guru and took a nationalist stand on the release of terrorist Masrat Alam. The Congress, like the BJP and many other political parties, had not approved of the manner in which Masrat Alam, who was responsible for more than 110 killings in Kashmir in 2010, was released.
However, what was highly significant was the statement of the Mirwaiz that the so-called Kashmir issue would remain unresolved unless all the political parties in India join hands or work in tandem. "Kashmiris have realized that it is not at all possible to expect any sitting Prime Minister in India, irrespective of the party they come from, to pursue resolution of the issue on their own. Individual political will and personal determination have not been enough to move the process forward…
To resolve the Kashmir issue, the elected Prime Ministers need the consistent support of the opposition parties. Unless there is consensus among the political parties at the centre with regard to policies and approach towards the handling of the Kashmir issue, it will always be hijacked and subject to real politicking by them while Kashmiris will continue to suffer. This was amply proved when both (Prime Ministers) Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh tried to break the ice but failed to achieve anything," he said. The Mirwaiz did make a point when he talked about the need of consensus among all the political parties at the centre. But the point is: Will any political party at the centre come forward to endorse the views of such seditionists as the Mirwaiz, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Yasin Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah, who want to wreck the Indian state by getting Jammu & Kashmir separated from India on the basis of two-nation theory? The answer is a big no, notwithstanding the fact that there are many Kashmir-centric outfits at the centre. What repeatedly happened in the Parliament after March 1 as far as Jammu & Kashmir was concerned had established beyond any shadow of doubt that no political party in the country would endorse any suggestion that aims at another communal partition of India. Since the Indian political class is one as far as its stand on Jammu & Kashmir is concerned, it would be only appropriate if the likes of Mirwaiz discard the politics of separatism, based on sectarian consideration, and join the national mainstream like the People's Conference chief Sajad Lone did.
