Army porters hold demonstration, demand govt jobs' | | | Early Times Report
Udhampur, Mar 14 : Army Porters' Association today held a protest at Udhampur in support of their long pending demand of permanent engagement in government /public sector department as assured by the then authorities after the victory in Kargil War 1999. Protestors took a rally from Indra Chowk Udhampur to Military Hospital (MH) Chowk and blocked the town hall road leading to Jmu Sgr National Highway. Later protestors took a protest rally and marched towards DC Office Udhampur after passing through Ramnagar Chowk, Court Road and Dhar Road. While addressing the protestors, Social activist Ajaz Sumberiya said that the demand of porter association for permanent engagement is genuine, keeping in view their service for the sake of motherland in the time of need along with the army troops in the most difficult terrain in Kargil and played a significant role in the victory by maintaining the flawless supply line to troops on front. "They deserve permanent engagement in lieu of their rendered service in time of need," he said while regretting that they still are waiting for justice for the last 15-16 years. Speakers appealed the union government to deliver justice to the hundreds of the porters. Meanwhile Additional District Commissioner Vikash Sharma and Gourav Mahajan, DySp Headquarters Udhampur who rushed to the protest venue assured protestors to take up their matter with army authorities and Divisional Commissioner Jammu. |
