Jammu, Mar 14: Outplaying the three time champions, Punjab Police, the star studded side of Punjab and Sindh Bank (PSB) today lifted the title trophy, for the second time, in the IV All India Police Martyrs' Memorial Hockey Tournament, hosted by the J&K Police under the aegis of Hockey Jammu and Kashmir at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today. The young side, comprising mostly the international stuff, displayed stamina and strength to dominate the formidable side of Punjab Police in the 70-minute game thereby made it a 3-2 win in front of a healthy gathering. The winning team awarded with a prize of Rs one lakh while the runners up Punjab Police presented with a cheque worth Rs 60,000. Third position holder, Indian Air Force (IAF), given away prize money of Rs 40,000. For his outstanding performance throughout the championship, Jarmanpreet Singh of PSB was declared player of the tournament while man of the match trophy went to Vikramjeet Singh of Punjab Police. Earlier, in the title clash, PSB took the first lead netting the ball in the 26th minute through Onkar Singh. The lead was levelled by fighting Punjab Police in the 34th minute when Amit Sandhu sounded the board. However, PSB again went ahead in the very next move with Harbir Singh netting the ball. Entering into the second half with 2-1 lead, PSB faced a tough challenge from Punjab Police which resulted into score again levelled 2-2 in the 43rd minute with Jaskaran Singh beating the goalkeeper but only to find PSB making it 3-2 by converting a penalty corner into goal in the 45th minute through skipper, Sarwanjit Singh. Earlier, in the hardliner, IAF trounced Gurdaspur Club 9-1 to finish third. Sanwar Ali struck hat trick scoring three back to back goals thereby helping the side made it a big win. From Gurdaspur Club, Amrit Paul Singh scored the only goal. In the final and valedictory function, Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh was chief guest, who gave away the winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. He appreciated the J&K Police, especially the Director General, K Rajendra Kumar for paying homage to the martyrs through the medium of sports. He also expressed sympathies with the members of the families, who were also invited at the closing function and presented with gifts as a token of love. |
