Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 14: The last Séance, a play in Hindustani performed by Shivani Cultural Sciety was a variegating transitioning of a thought process that the characters of a play undergo while in some ultra mundane space where they meet and talk about the futility of being the ‘live characters’ of a playwright’s imagination that yields them into the hands of the dramatists for performance.
The play was an intense debate of souls of Devdas, Paro and Chandermukhi who meet on a space plaza and revisit their characters on earth. They are dead.
It, somehow recreates an effortful supply of the need felt with the characters for a resourceful ending to their apathy in the worldly treatment and hence meet to finalize their fate.
Dev,Paro and Chandramukhi meet in some ultra-mundane space. All are dead as per the author’s wish. Here they revisit their characterization done by the original playwright ( Sarat Chander Chatopadhyay) in the world and muse as to why it was only the destiny of the three as designed by the playwright and not something else that could have been natural and glorifying. Since they are characters borne by the playwright , they try to revisit certain sequences as performed in the world through various hands. The three also feel helpless to be under the direct control of the writer and sometimes feel suffocated. A narrator who himself is the original writer of the subject too intervenes in the process while elucidating his claims as to how and why such mythical plot took shape in his mind. He takes them to certain conclusions, but is tagged by the three as escapist and a coward.
Finally Dev, Paro and Chandrarmukhi summons him in a witness box and cross questions him about their identity.
Though the answer remains elusive to all three including Anila Devi also, they however admit that they are comfortable lot in the present world where they “can live freely” after death.
The characters try for some diverse experimental ploys on their own self to maneuver exceptional grooming of their lives turn somewhat hard a fact to be assimilated by the audience, yet the exertion is done to project a fragile mindset of an alleged weak personalities pupated into larger than life-size characters undertaking a yeoman’s job to find their identity is the essence of The last Séance
Raj Bhagat as Devdas, Neha Raj Dabia as Paro and Vandana Hans as Chandermukhi gave scintillating performances. Ashish Zadoo as Sutradhar and Anila Devi too chipped in with his acting prowess.
The lights and its effects weer wonderfully conceived and executed by Dr Amit Gupta while Shalini Sharma produced a vibrant set.
Vikram Sharma had authored and directed the The Last Séance.
