RHRSS Bhaderwah of SKUAST organizes training on propagation of walnut | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 26 : A training programme on 'low cost propagation of walnut under poly house conditions' at Bhaderwah by the Regional Horticulture Research Sub-station of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu organized under the ICAR sponsored Network Project on Outreach of Technologies for Temperate Fruit Crops. According to press release, principal Investigator of the Network Project Dr. Mahital Jamwal advised the participants to undertake the practice of propagation of walnut under low cost poly houses to increase their propagation survivality, which in turn will raise their economic status since its demand is increasing immensely in Jammu and Kashmir and other temperate regions of the country. He told the farmers that the vegetative propagation of walnut under polyhouse conditions will provide the optimum conditions for it propagation and produce the planting material of known quality with a higher success rate as compared to open conditions and will lead the plant into bearing in much shorter time as compared to the seedling plants of walnut which normally takes 12-15 years to reach their commercial bearing. He emphasized that the propagation of walnut plants may be undertaken using high quality plant material for stock and scion preferably with commercial cultivars. Dr. Neeraj Kotwal advised the farmers about plant protection measures to be taken against insect pests during the propagation of walnut plants in the nurseries. He also suggested remedial measures for walnut weevil and other problems in walnut crop which were raised by the farmers during the training programme. Dr. VK Singh apprised the famers about the plant disease control measures to be taken in the walnut plant nurseries and during their propagation under poly houses and more humid conditions. Dr. Rohit Sharma talked about the importance of optimum fertilization for maintaining proper health of walnut plants in the nurseries. He told the farmers that the old plantations have been ignored for any kind of fertilization since long resulting in their low productivity and annual application of manures and fertilizers to the walnut plants can improve the yield and can check the alternate bearing in walnut. Rajesh Kumar and Abdul Rashid assisted the training programme to demonstrate the propagation techniques in walnut to the participants. The training was conducted under the guidance of Dr. J.P. Sharma, Director Research of SKUAST-Jammu. Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH), Srinagar is the Nodal Agency of the ICAR Network Project on Outreach of Technologies for Temperate Fruit Crops. |
