Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 26: Four years since Union government had approved funds for renovation of two historic centers of state's performing arts, no amount has been released leaving the much needed renovation of these complexes in quandary. Sources informed Early Times that two prestigious Theater complexes of Jammu and Kashmir including Abhinav Theatre in Jammu and Tagore Theatre in Kashmir, were in dilapidated condition, and four years back, a proposal was approved by Union Government to renovate these Theatres. According to the proposal approved by Union government, sources said, 40 percent of project cost for both theaters was to be born by state government while remaining 60 percent by Union government. Sources further informed that total estimated cost for renovation of Abhinav Theatre and Tagore Hall Srinagar was Rs 5.27 Crores and 12.96 Crores respectively. "Out of the sanctioned amount, Union government had so far not released a single penny", sources said. "In the last four years, some of renovation work has been done and that too from the funds sanctioned by state government but share of the Union government is yet to be released due to which cultural activities in state are badly affected", sources said. "Several Ministers of previous government had visited the sites and all of them had given assurances that the renovation would be completed on time but it proved nothing except empty recurring", he said. He further said that the seating capacity of the Abhinav theatre was 804 and state Roads and Building Department installed the chairs but when the monitoring committee of Union government visited Abhinav Theatre, they rejected the work done and the chairs installed. "The chairs which were installed were not comfortable for sitting and were very congested", sources said. The monitoring team of Union government had made certain observations on the seating arrangement and sought immediate alterations. "According to suggestion of the committee, the department has decided to arrange seating of 605 instead of existing 804", he said. Another source informed Early Times that owing to lackadaisical approach of Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the art lovers of the state have suffered as many functions have to be organized in private auditoriums which costs fortunes. Additional secretary of Academy of Art Culture and Languages, Ravinder Singh Aman said that the most of renovation work has been completed and once the Union government releases the funds, the renovation work would be completed. |
