Soft policy against terror could prove counter productive | Separatists attend Pak day amid BJP silence | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 26: Separatists attending Pakistan day celebrations in Delhi earlier this week has not evoked any reaction from the Baharatiya Janta Party (BJP). No fingers were raised this time around nor were any noises made. Mostly separatists from Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani to Javed Mir rushed to Delhi to attend the dinner hosted by the Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Surprisingly, none of the BJP leaders reacted to Pakistan High Commission hosting separatists. Nor did they term the move as anti-India. It passed off as a routine practice." Pertinently, last year Pakistan High Commission was reprimanded by India for hosting separatists. Even the Modi led government which had taken over the reins afresh had called off the Indo-Pak foreign secretary level talks to protest against Pakistan High Commission holding parleys with separatists. A defence analyst said, "It's unfortunate that BJP led government has started following the footsteps of the Congress led UPA-government. If separatists are given a free hand and Pakistan is allowed to nurture them it can have far reaching consequences in Jammu and Kashmir." He said it has taken 25 long years for the security forces to break the back of militancy in JK. "One mistake can lead to another turmoil hitting JK. Modi government should remain firm on its stand rather than following the footsteps of its predecessor," the analyst added. A Kashmir watcher ridiculed separatists for making a beeline at Pakistan embassy in New Delhi. "They wanted to mark their attendance to ensure they get their salaries on time. Everyone knows Pakistan has been abetting and sponsoring terror, and violence in Kashmir for the past 25-years. Separatists who attended the Pak day celebrations have been instrumental in orchestrating protests and stone pelting across Kashmir," he added. History stands testimony to the fact that separatists during the past 25-years have not come forward to hold talks with India despite repeated attempts made by Indian leaders. "Till date separatists have been reminded on many occasions that if they are interested in the welfare of people they should talk to Indian leadership, but they seem least bothered about people. For them what matters is money, which they get from the other side to run their shops," said a politician. Critics are of the opinion that if BJP follows soft policy towards terror and gives Pakistan space, then there is every possibility about militants and their handlers getting emboldened and carrying out attacks, which we witnessed in Samba and Kathua recently. "People of country have pinned lot of hopes on Modi and soon after he had taken over he took a bold stand against terror and Pakistan. One hopes he (Modi) remains firm on his stand and makes it clear to one and all that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and the people who oppose JK's accession with India have no place here, they should be deported to the neighboring country," said a critic. He expressed dismay over BJP leaders from Jammu region maintaining silence over the recent developments and separatists being given a free hand. "If BJP leaders in JK don't wake up and watch as mute spectators they would become irrelevant and lose the ground which the party had made during all these years," the critic added. |
