JKSS demands minority status for Sikh community | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 26 : To discuss the socio political problems being faced by Sikh Community a meeting of J&K Sikh Societies (JKSS) held under the chairmanship of Gurdeep Singh Sasan, Chief Patron of the Amalgamate. Addressing the meeting, Sasan expressed his serious concern in Government's failure in granting minority status to Sikhs in J&K. He said that the Sikhs in J&K are deprived of their fundamental rights of availing benefits under various schemes which are being enjoyed by Sikhs in the rest of the country. The minority affairs ministry runs three major scholarship runs means come merits scholarship schemes. He said that it is unfortunate and blatant denial of justice to Sikhs that J&K is not covered by NCM Act 1992 whose section 1 (2) states that the Act extends to the whole of India except of J&K. Sasan urged the State Government to immediately extend NCM Act in J&K and grant minority status to Sikhs along the lines of model Act developed by NCM and form the minority commission which the community has been demanding since long. Sasan further urged the Government to make to Anand Karaj Marriage Act applicable in J&K as the Act has already being applicable throughout India except in J&K. He demanded that the state Govt. must bring bill into State Assembly to get the Anand Karaj marriage Act passed to make it applicable in J&K thereby giving the opportunity to Sikhs to register their marriages under Anand Marriage Act. The members expressed their serious concern over government's failure to give representation to Sikhs in PSC and other statutory bodies and urged the government to stop step motherly treatment to the community which feels neglected in all the fields. |
