Apprehending more landslides, authorities evacuate 8 families to safer places in Kokernag

Anantnag, Mar 31: Authorities in Kokernag area of Anantnag district on Tuesday evening evacuated 8 families comprising 43 members to safer places in view of the landslides in the area.
Official sources told Early Times that the eight families of Adhal village of Kokernag were evacuated and accommodated in a government school building after landslides hit a few residential houses in the village.
"8 families of were shifted to Government middle school Adhal Kokernag in Kokernag during an evacuation conducted under the supervision of the Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Kokernag," an official confirmed to Early Times.
He said that on the directions of deputy commissioner Anantnag Bashir Ahmad Khan, SDM Kokernag, Tehsildar Kokernag, and other senior police officials visited the village and took stock of the evacuation of the people in this land slide hit village.
He said that Deputy Commissioner directed the concerned officers to keep close watch on the situation and provide all assistance to the affected families.
However, Abdul Rashid Malik a resident of Adhal village told reporters that after evacuation, administration has not provided them any kind of help. "We were asked to stay in this school building but after that no help was provided to us." He said.
Meanwhile, reports pouring from a nearby village sonibrai suggested that at least two houses collapsed due to land sliding during which 75 year old women sustained injuries. There was no immediate confirmation to the incident from the administration as several senior officials avoided repeated phone calls from Early Times.
A senior police official in Anantnag told Early Times that one company of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) today arrived in the district and took stock of the situation by visiting several flood prone areas of the district.
