Promote peace to attract bumper tourist & pilgrim traffic
4/8/2015 11:49:43 PM
Now that attempts are being made by militants at destabilizing peace in Kashmir it has become mandatory for the top brass of the Army, paramilitary forces and the police, to review the entire security related structure and infrastructure so that loopholes, wherever they are found, were removed or rectified. What should be disturbing for the PDP-BJP coalition Government is the teething trouble it has started facing in the state. The way the separatists have emerged out of their hibernation is one problem for the Government and the other being rise in the level of militancy related activities and incidents of violence During the last three weeks. The very foundation of the security grid was rocked when militants attacked a police station in Kathua in which five people, including three security personnbel, were killed. It was followed by another attack on the Samba Army camp. Though all the four militants, two fresh infiltrators having been involved in Kathua police station attack and two others in the Samba Army camp attack, had been eliminated, it reflected the style of cunctioning of militants who continue to choose their target for target at their sweet will. The memories of Kathua police st ation and Samba Army camp were fresh in the mind of people when two security personnel were killed at Kunzar village (Tangmarg) followed by three militant attacks in which three policemen, one surrendered militant were killed and several others injured.: In the wake of three suspected militant attacks in Kashmir on Monday, security across the Valley has been beefed up. Barricades and police check-posts have been established in various intersections in Srinagar immediately after the attacks. Which was followed by tight vigil is being maintained at major security installations. That militants are "choosing soft targets. Is no longer a secret though there is lot of pressure on militants.which may not allow then to set some definite pattern for attacks. However, police authorities claim that police morale is upbeat and during a recent meeting of senior police officers convened by the DGP, Rajendra Kumar, need was felt for upgrading the security grid not only within the st ate but also on the LOC and on the IB. This security grid has to be upgraded on the LOC and on the IB in view of intermittent ceasefire violations being committed by the Pakistani forces simply for the purpose of carving oujt an ingress passage for militants. It was evident from the recent infiltration of four militants who later split in two groups, one attacking the Kathua police station and the remaining two attacking the Samba Army camp. Apart from destabilising the security scenario such activities could even led to destabilization of political situation. And already the state Government its agencies besides several lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir have been tormented by the flash floods since Sept ember last. The recent flood fury and landslides have resulted in the death of scores of people including four Armymen. The recent floods have added to the aches of the state Government because of the weak fiscal resources that do not allow it to carry out relief and rehabilitation work on a large scale. If the September last floods affected the tourist traffic to Kashmir the ongoing flood fury may hit the summer tourist traffic to the valley. It may, if the flood situation does not improve, affected the flow of pilgrims to the shrines of Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath cave. Hence incident of militancy related activities besides floods have the potential of hitting the tourist traffic to Kashmir. Once it does so it would dampen the Chief Minister, Mufti Sayeed's ambitious project of making Jammu and Kashmir a favourite hub for tourists from all over the world. Holidayers and excursionists wish to rest in areas that are completely peaceful. No holidayer would dare to spend money and stay in an area where guns roar all the time. This makes it mandatory for the Government and the security forces, including the Army, to intensify anti-insurgency operations so that whatever number of militants were operating in Jammu and Kashmir were either killed or arrested. Once peace returns to Kashmir one could expect a bumper tourist traffic besides the pilgrim traffic that is bound to tone up the economy of the state and its people.
