Army unlikely to oblige State, Central Governments | Revocation of AFSPA | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 8: The J&K Assembly on Tuesday witnessed a piquant situation with the BJP legislators expressing themselves against the demand for the withdrawal of the AFSPA from the state, the PDP sticking to its stand on the AFSPA and the opposition NC and the Congress taking a dig on the ruling coalition, saying that the PDP and the BJP were contradicting each other and speaking differently on the issue. Outside the assembly, an altogether different development took place on the same issue and the army came out with his own take on the issue of AFSPA. The Army said that the central and state governments were "considering" the issue of AFSPA and they will "share their opinion on the subject". "The entire issue (AFSPA) is being considered by Central and State Government. Let them continue with their job. We will also continue with our job," General Officer Commanding of Army's 15 Corps, Lt Gen Subrata Saha told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar. "We will also share our inputs and opinion on the subject," he said. The statement of Lt Gen Subrata Saha was very significant, as it was coupled with an equally significant state. The statement was: "The Army has learnt a lesson from Shopian incident in which three policemen were killed in a suspected militant attack on Monday. The policemen had gone to investigate a land dispute and were unarmed. The militants took advantage and shot them dead. Investigations into the incident are on. We must take extra precautions in future to avoid such incidents. Army will also evolve extra security plans to stop such incidents in future". The statement further said, "Army shares the grief of the families of three slain policemen". Lt Gen Saha made a number of other important statements. For instance, he asserted that "in future no such incident should be allowed to take place", that "in normal duties we must take basic precautions to avoid such unfortunate incidents", and that "about 200 militants are 'active' in Kashmir". "Snow has started to melt. The number of people waiting on launch pads across border has also gone up…Soldiers at Line of Control (LoC) are maintaining extra vigil to ensure infiltration is brought down to zero. There is also typical increase in number of launch pads across the border," he also said. He didn't say that he the Army didn't share the view of those opposed to the AFSPA. He only said that the Army would share their view with the government. The fact that he made the state while referring to the Shopian terror attack which culminated in the gruesome killing of three unarmed policemen clearly suggested that the Army is unlikely to oblige the opponents of the AFSPA. |
