'Unless it is revised it cannot be approved' | Centre unlikely to clear Rs 44,000 cr flood relief package | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 22: The Centre is not satisfied with the Rs 44,000 crore relief and rehabilitation package for the flood-hit sent by the BJP-PDP government for approval. The Mufti Sayeed government had sent the package in totality as estimated by the previous Omar Abdullah headed government. "The package lacks basics information on the damages and extent of the damages. It is grossly inadequate and exaggerated. Unless, it is revised it cannot be approved. Money is not the constrain, but the point is it should reach the affected person and in right amount," said a senior official. The non-approval of the central plan is affecting the relief and rehabilitation programme, which has been flagged as the priority concern of the party. Mufti had publically said that the process of relief and rehabilitation would start in the April, but it has not been done so far as the Centre has not cleared the plan. It's for this reason, that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had called on the prime minister urging him to release the plan at the earliest. "The delay in plan could hurt the credibility of the PDP especially, which has already taken a great risk of the joining the BJP especially after the tension and subsequent developments over the arrest of separatist leader Masarat Alam," said a PDP leader. The delay in release of the package could also affect the BJP in the state. The maximum number of deaths have taken place in the Jammu region (214), much more than the Valley figures. Worst affected areas are the constituencies of the BJP MPs and they are already being criticized for delay of the Centre in giving assistance to them. "The state unit of the BJP is itself worried over the delay. But their problem is they can't speak a word about it with the PM. So they we are also dependent on the package as the PDP is," said a senior BJP leader. |
