BARAMULLA, Apr 26: Scores of villages in Baramulla district of north Kashmir are facing immense problems due to dilapidated roads leading to their villages.
Villages including Maidanan, Mayan, Manjgram, Manchikrand, Naganardi, Niloosa, and Nowgama are in a bad shape due to the bad roads.
“In the absence of motorable roads, we are forced to ferry patients to the sub-district hospital Uri, which causes delay in treatment and risks the lives of the patients. For the past many years, we have been making repeated representations to the officials but to no avail,” said local residents.
A local resident of Uri, Riyaz Ahmad said the government has ignored them for unknown reasons. He said they were made to pay from Rs 80 to 100 to Sumo drivers to ferry household things. “Sometimes, we help each other to take gas cylinders, ration and other necessary items to our homes,” he said.
The fare from Baramulla to Uri is only Rs 60 to 70, “but for the 6 km distance, we are charged around Rs 90 to 100 by the drivers from Uri to our villages,” said Riyaz.
He said the residents have been making repeated visits to the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, Baramulla, with a request to repair the stretch but to no avail.
“Reaching schools in Boniyar and Uri is a cumbersome exercise. After arduous journey on a stretch full of slopes, we are left with no energy to do the home work,” said Irshad Ahmad, a Class X student.
While most of the roads were repaired in the Uri town, but roads in our far flung villages have been left unattended for many years, the residents said.
Last year, the department concerned had started repair work on few link roads but it was left incomplete for unknown reasons.
Meanwhile a senior official of Roads and Building (R&B) department said, “Within a day or two we will visit these areas to see the condition of the roads.”
