Pro-active approach must to deal with natural disaster: Hamid | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 26: Expressing grave shock over devastations caused in Nepal and other areas of India because of earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale, People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Hamid Choudhary urged the state administration to remain cautious especially when Indian Meteorology Department has warned of more earthquakes aftershocks in North India in coming days as well. The vulnerabilities of earthquake, fire, floods and avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir State are on rise in the given situation a review of disaster management plans by Deputy Commissioners of all the districts of the state would go in right earnest and help save thousands of lives in case of any natural disaster. This would be nothing but a pro-active approach to deal with any untoward situation in near future. Choudhary Hamid said role of various stakeholders under the umbrella of the State Disaster Management Authority including various government departments like Revenue, Police, Irrigation and Flood Control, PWD, PHE, PDD, CAPD, Health, Agriculture and most importantly Army and other Air Force must be specified well in advance to ensure quick and prompt response to any disaster whether natural or manmade. The entire North West Himalayan Region he added was seismically vulnerable and Jammu and Kashmir was in seismic zones IV and V while Srinagar was itself in Zone V and has witnessed several earthquakes in the past worth being that of 2005. "We cannot afford to leave everything to the situation as and when it will occur", he added. |
