| Time for BJP to stop vote bank erosion | | | | Despite being upset over growing erosion in its vote bank the BJP leadership in Jammu and Kashmir has made it clear that there was no question of "snatching" AIIMS type inst itute from Kashmir, which the Government of India has sanctioned for the valley.Well nobody from the Jammu region has urged the BJP, especially its Deputy Chief Minister,Dr Nirmal Singh,to "snatch" the AIMS type institute from the valley and establish it in Jammu.In fact the Jammuites have been clamouring for setting up a separate AIIMS type institute in the region where the level of medical facilities and health care system were lower when compared to the valley where one Institute of Medical Sciences has been functional during the last about 40 years.It is yet to find the reason behind the categorical assertion of Dr Nirmal Singh who has said that there was no question of snatching the AIIMS from Kashmir. There ar e others who keep on suggesting to the Govenrment agencies and private entrepreneurs to upgrade the existing medical facilities by promoting health care system in hospitals, nursing homes and the medical college. Yes, there can be only one reason behind the assertion of Dr Nirmal Singh when he ruled out the possibility of "snatching" AIIMS type institute sanctioned for Kashmir by the Government of India.It seems the BJP is trying to gain foothold in the Kashmir valley and by not conceding the demand of the Jammuites for setting up a separate AIIMs in Jammu the BJP leadership wants to create an impression that it is no longer anti-Kashmiris and anti-Muslim. In fact the Jammuites had been demanding that a separate AIIMS be established in the region of Jammu which could further remove or rfesolve the problem of regional discrimination. That the state of Jammu and Kashmir enjoys a special status within the union of India under Article 370 of the Constitution of India. Hence enjoying the special status deserves special attention from the Government of India which can be done by sanctioning a separate AIIMs for the Jammu region. During the pr evious Congress led UPA Government the Government of India had sanctioned one central university and onea IIM for the Kashmir valley.Once this decision was known to people in Jammu they resented the rationale behind the decision.They seemed to be right.Since Jammu is one of the three regions of the state both IIM and CU cannot be sanctioned for only region of Kashmir. The state unit of the Congress was in deep predicament because its vote bank was limited to the Jammu region. Senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress, including ministers, landed in New Delhi and discussed the issue threadbare with the senior functionaries of the party high command, especially the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi is said to have suggested to the previous Congress led UPA Government to keep its decision on sanctioning one CU for Kashmir in tact and sanction a separate CU for the Jammu region.It is what the previous central Government did and the people in Jammu heaved a sigh of relief. Well during the last one month of the coalition rule the BJP,which share s power with the PDP,has put in hardly any efforts for persuading the BJP led NDA Government to sanction a separate AIIMS for the Jammu region.The BJP should know it well that its vote bank is in the region of Jammu.And in the previous Assembly election the party won 25 seats out of 37 in the region of Jammu which enabled it toshare power with the PDP.It is for the first time that the BJP set a new record by winning 25 Assembly seats from the region of Jammu and all the three Lok Sabha seat s from the regions of Jammu and Ladakh. Yes,the BJP won these seats because of the Modi wave .Besides the people in Jammu region do support the BJP. The way the BJP leadership has adopted a passive stance over the raging demand of the Jammuites for setting up AIIMs in the region can aggravate vote bank erosion process.And those days are gone when the BJP was sitting on cloud nine with 25 seats in its kitty.This is evident from the way people in the region responded to the call for shutdown against the BJP's plan to sanction AIIMs type inst itute only for the Kashmir valley.It is still time for the BJP to undo the wrong and prevail upon the party high command to sanction a separate AIIMs for Jammu.If it is done the BJP may have a chance to regain its support from the people of Jammu. |
