Army called back, schools, colleges to reopen on Monday | As tension recedes, govt lifts curfew, restores internet services | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 6: As the tension, that had gripped Satwari and nearly half a dozen localities in its vicinity Wednesdaylast following removal of Bhinderwale's posters and the subsequent killing of a Sikh youth in police firing on protesters, today showed signs of receding, the district administration lifted curfew from 11 tonight and restored internet services. Army, that was called in Thursday following violent protests by people and the situation gradually slipping out of the hands of the district administration, was called back this evening. Trouble erupted Wednesday after police removed the posters of militant leader Bhinderwale from Satwari area. Anti-police protests were held by the people who also stoned police personnel, injuring a few of them. While the ding-dong battle between the two sides was in progress, a Sikh youth had stabbed police Sub-Inspector Arun Kumar. As the injury was of serious nature, he was hospitalised. The matter was sorted out on Wednesday evening itself on the intervention of Sikh religious leaders and some community elders but some Sikh youth regrouped themselves Thursday morning and held protests near Satwari and at various places on Satwari-Miran Sahib road. The situation deteriorated after the protesters resorted to heavy stone-pelting, injuring at least four cops. In retaliation, police resorted to lathicharge and fired teargas shells. When the situation deteriorated further, SSP Uttam Chand's PSO allegedly opened fire, resulting in the instant death of Jagjit Singh, son of Narveer Singh of Chohala. Sensing more trouble after the killing, the district administration placed Satwari, Rani Park, Gadi Garh, Bhore Camp, Chatha and some other nearby areas under curfew for an indefinite period. Section 144, which restricts the assembling of 4-5 people at one place, was imposed in Gole Gujaral locality and some other sensitive Jammu areas as a precautionary measure. Post-mortem was conducted on the Jagjit's body by a Board of Doctors at GMCH here Fridayevening. It was cremated at Chohala at 11.30 am today as per the religious rites. The ashes along with osseous fragments (asthian) were immersed by the family members in the mighty Chenab river at Akhnoor in the evening. A senior police officer said the situation by and large remained peaceful in the curfew-bound areas throughout the day today. There were, however, anti-police protests by Sikh youth in some Satwari areas, he added, saying heavy police contingents had been deployed in all the sensitive areas to avoid any untoward incident. Divisional commissioner, Jammu, Pawan Kotwal said curfew would be relaxed from tonight and schools and other educational institutions would open from Monday next. Jammu district magistrate Simrandeep Singh said the curfew would be lifted from 11 tonight. "Internet services, that were blocked to stop the spread of rumours on social networking sites, have also been restored and army called back," he informed. If the situation permitted, there would be no curfew on Sunday, Singh said. In the marathon meeting of district and police administration with Sikh leaders last night, all the demands of the Sikh community were accepted. PSO Saini, who was found guilty of having fired the killer bullet on Jagjit, has been booked in a murder case under section 302 of RPC. Accepting their other demands, the government also agreed to transfer of SSP Uttam Chand, suspend Satwari police station SHO Kulbir Singh, pay ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh and a government job to the next kin of the victim. The government has ordered a magisterial probe into the firing incident and violence. It would be conducted by the divisional commissioner. Since the post of DIG, Jammu, was lying vacant after the retirement of Shakeel Beig on May 31 last, traffic police DIG Ashkoor Wani was given additional charge to deal with the situation. Additional SP Rajiv Panday is given charge of SSP, Jammu, and Manjeet Singh is posted as new SHO of Satwari police station. |
