As PDP-BJP govt turns three months old people yearn for 'visible' change | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 6: The first three months of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state have proved to be 'disappointing' for the people since no visible change is found in the air and on the ground. From day one the state government has been hogged by controversies with PDP and BJP leaders exchanging barbs on many occasions. Many issues have been projected by the coalition partners in their own way while responding to their electorate. While as in Kashmir the people are unhappy over the tardy progress in rehabilitation of flood affected people the people of Jammu are critical of the government more so BJP over some key issues. PDP which got decisive mandate in the Kashmir valley has been accused by a section of people of forming the government with a party that has always wished against the sentiments of people of valley. Some people contend that the PDP's claim of forming the government for getting funds from New Delhi has fallen flat since there is no visible change. "People in general and the flood affected ones had great expectations from the PDP-BJP government and it was assumed that there would be free flow of funds, but that was not to be. The people who suffered heavy losses during the flood are at loss what to do and how to start their lives afresh," said Mohammad Yousuf, a resident of Gaw Kadal. The non-insured traders of the Kashmir valley are running from pillar to post in getting the compensation cheques. Majority of these traders blame the government for the lackadaisical attitude in distribution of the relief cheques. There are others who say that relief cheques have been distributed among the blue-eyed traders. "The issue of rehabilitation of flood affected people is lingering on and a new controversy has come up. Establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has pitted the people of Kashmir against those living in the Jammu region. The coalition partners are singing in different voices with regard to the establishment of AIIMS in the state and this is quite disturbing," said Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Jawahar Nagar. It would be in place to mention here that Minister of State (MoS) in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Dr. Jitendra Singh had recently said that AIIMS would first come up in Jammu and then only in Kashmir. This is quite contrary to the stated position of Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who has been saying that AIIMS would be set up in Kashmir while as Jammu would get Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM). "Both PDP and BJP are playing to the galleries and issuing statements while keeping proper consideration of their electorate. Instead of removing the controversies the leaders of the two parties are giving disturbing statements. If it continues like this then it is quite possible that the government may crumble at any point of time," said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Sanat Nagar. |
