Early Times Report

JAMMU, June 16: Several political leaders, especially Harsh Dev Singh, who heads the Panthers Party, have suggested to the BJP-PDP coalition Government to persuade the Government of India to divert some proposals on investing in electronics manufacturing units in Jammu and Kashmir.
Harsh Dev Singh said that if newspaper reports are to be believed the Government of India has received proposals for electronics manufacturing to the tune of Rs 60000 crore.
He has said that even if 10 per cent of these proposals are diverted for Jammu and Kashmir it would prove a major boon for the industrial sector.
He said that during the last six years there has not been any major investment in the industrial sector whether it be from the Government or from the private entrepreneurs. He said that poor investment in industrial sector has aggravated the problem of unemployment. Harsh Dev Singh and others suggested to the PDP and the BJP leaders that they should visit New Delhi and persuade the central Government to sanction some of the projects for electronics manufacturing for Jammu and Kashmir and the two coalition partners should stop wasting their time on frivolous issues thereby deceiving people with their juicy slogans and promises.
In fact, during the last 25 years private and Government investment in the industrial sector in Jammu and Kashmir has remained very poor with the result the state has not been able to keep its pace with neighbouring states as far as development of economy and growth in industrial products is concerned.
Poor private investment has been the result of fluid security situation in the state, especially in the Kashmir valley. The activities of militants and those of the separatists have vitiated the atmosphere in the state, especially in the valley, with the result the central Government and the state Government have developed cold feet on investing in the sector of industry in Jammu and Kashmir.
Harsh Dev Singh said that between 1996 and 2002 and later between 2008 and 2014 the successive National Conference led Governments have not allowed private investment in the industrial sector in Jammu region.
Those who had submitted proposals for investing in industrial sector in Jammu were told by the Government agencies that permission would be granted if they set up the units in Kashmir. The Panthers leader wanted the Government to change this attitude and ensure development of all the three regions in the state.
