Still upto centre to ward off crisis over AIMS | | | Now that the crisis in the shape of indefinite Jammu Bandh and other protest rallies against delay in sanctioning AIMS for Jammu is over with the decision of the AIMS coordination Committee to postpone the programme it is upto the central Government to end the prolonged uncertainty over the issue. The Deputy Chief Minister,Dr Nirmal Singh, has assured the members of the AIMS coordination committer that within one month the centre would make an announcement on the establishment of one AIMS for Jammu. This announcement has three vital aspects linked with it.First people in the Jammu region do believe that Dr Nirmal Singh’s assurance is honoured by the central Government so that the region of Jammu is spared of protest rallies and shutdowns which could derail peace and that too when the Annual Amarnath yatra is still to be concluded.Secondly, the central Government, while sanctioning one AIMS for Jammu, does not cancel its earlier announcement under which one AIMS was sanctioned for the Kashmir valley.Thirdly, the BJP led NDA Government will ensure that in case of sanctioning other institutes or projects for the state it should not ignore or give a raw deal to the region of Jammu. Even if the central Government sanctions a separate AIMS for Jammu it may still help the state unit of the BJP to regain the ground that it had lost during the last 100 days of sharing power with the PDP Yes,the state unit of the BJP may not be on cloud 9 if the central Government sanctioned a separate AIMS for Jammu because whatever credibility the BJP had in Jammu has been lost by inordinate delay in conceding the demand of the people of the region who were crying for AIMS for Jammu. The BJP can regain its lost ground if the central Government honours the commitment made by Dr Nirmal Singh to the members of the committee that had been set up to organize the agitation against denying to Jammu the right to have one AIMS type institute.Yes,if within one month the centre announced its decision on sanctioning one AIMS for Jammu the BJP may be able to ward off the crisis that it could have invited in the shape of growing peoples’ wrath against the party they had voted for in the last Assembly election. No doubt it has taken the centre over 100 days to rectify the wrong that it had done by not emulating the Congress led UPA Government which had to set up one central university in Jammu after people in the region resented against the announces of establishing one central university in Kashmir. Why there is need for the central Government to keep its decision on establishing one AIMS for Kashmir ? Yes,there is need for allowing one AIMS type inst itute to grow in Kashmir. If the centre sanctioned one AIMS for Jammu after “snatching” the vale of Kashmir its AIMS it would create a political storm allowing separatists a space where they could display and demonstrate their anti-India and anti-BJP sentiments. There is no doubt that voters in the Kashmir valley had rejected the BJP in the last Assembly election but if the BJP led NDA Government does not cancel its sanction for AIMS in Kashmir it could help the BJP to gain some ground. There would be many among the people in Kashmir who would welcome the BJP if the centre sanctioned one AIMS for Jammu without “snatching” the one already sanctioned for the Kashmir valley. This one incident could help people in Kashmir to believe that BJP is not anti-Kashmiris.It could allow them a chance to believe that the BJP is not anti-Muslim.And those in Kashmir could tell their counterparts in Jammu that look the BJP led NDA Government does not give a raw deal to the people in the Jammu region. The AIMS issue needs to be tackled carefully and tactfully so that the BJP is able to win the support of people of not only the Kashmir valley but the Jammu region too. |
