NHAI's promise to ease traffic falls flat | Even emergency, exempted tubes are jammed by unruly vehicle operators | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 4: The ambitious project of NHAI which is underway in Jammu for easing vehicular traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has failed to yield the desired results. Local travellers rued that the NHAI promise to provide people comfortable journey is likely to prove wrong as the national agency seems incapable to handle the traffic jams. They said there were no traffic jams on the highway when its 4-laning had not been done. Munish Mehra, a commuter, told Early Times that even after paying a toll of around Rs 150, the NHAI had failed to render the requisite services to the travellers. He again said that frequent traffic congestion was becoming a routine affair at bottle neck of toll plaza. Sources said the problem of traffic congestion had become so intense that travellers had sometimes to wait for 2 to 3 hours at the toll plaza. There was so much of mismanagement at the toll plaza that vehicles operators had been jamming even the emergency and exempted tube which is meant for army vehicles and ambulances. NHAI officials said the vehicle operators forcibly "enter the exempted lane and block it to traffic". Several attempt to contact Project Director NHAI went in vain as he was not available. |
