8/2/2015 12:17:24 AM

Early Times Report
akhnoor, Aug 1: In view of the spurt in terrorist attacks and infiltration bids from across the border in Jammu Region, the people of Akhnoor concerned over the security of main artery linking to twin border districts today have demanded immediate handing over of the security of old steel bridge over Chenab at Akhnoor to Army to avoid any untoward incident.
"This vital bridge, which has witnessed a terror attack in 2003, but has been left at the mercy of Jammu and Kashmir police since November 2010 reasons better known to state authorities, Satya Pal Saraf ,organizer of Viklang Chhatra Trust, a Akhnoor based Non Government Organization (NGO).
He said that this bridge which has strategic significance is being guarded by two inadequately equipped policemen on each side jeopardizing the security of the people of the border town of Akhnoor.
"The two police stations viz. Kanachak and Akhnoor are managing the traffic on the east and west side of the strategically important bridge respectively', Mr Saraf stated and alleged the administration is failing to address due security to this bridge ".
Though on April 26, 2008, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh dedicated another bridge to the nation on his visit to Akhnoor providing easy connectivity from Jammu to Rajouri-Poonch but this bridge still has not lost its importance, he said while urging upon the government to immediately hand over the security of old Akhnoor bridge to Army.
