IFC official, contractor making fortunes out of Jehlum beatification | Selling extracted silt in open market illegally | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Anantnag, Sept 15: Throwing directive of Chief Engineer (CE), Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department to winds, the influential contractors in alleged connivance with some IFC officials are selling illegally extracted silt from river Jhelum at Badshaibagh Bijbehara in open market, thus causing a heavy loss to state exchequer. Reports said that I&FC CE had directed his officials in Anantnag district to ensure that the contractors use the extracted silt only for raising the embankments of the river Jhelum at the spot. They said that the CE had directed contractors to use the slit for filling up a patch of land situated in front of famed Bijbehara Mughal Garden but contrary to his directive, contractors in alleged nexus with some I&FC officials were selling it in open market. "I&FC department's work on beautification of Jhelum from Padshaibagh Bridge is currently going on and the contractors are alleged to be removing the silt and selling it illegally," an I&FC official told Early Times. "The ongoing illegal practice is benefiting the officials and contractors but is badly affecting the state exchequer and people of Bijbehara," he added. Locals said that the threat of outbreak of diseases in Bijbehara town is looming large as the vehicles carrying silt from the spot to other locations litter dust on the roads which is giving tuff time to pedestrians. A team from Municipal committee Bijbehara today also visited the spot and asked the contractors to stop the illegal practice of carrying silt to the interiors of Bijbehara town. Reports said that contractors in nexus with the employees of I&FC department are dumping the extracted silt in far off villages instead of raising the embankments of the river. Executive Engineer I&FC department, Bashir Ahmad Shah admitted that the CE had asked him to ensure that the extracted silt "get used for raising the embankments and filling of land along the river". "Sale of extracted silt is totally illegal. I will look into the matter and ensure to stop it from tomorrow," he added. When contacted, I&FC Superintendent Engineer too assured action. |
