In Kashmir, NC workers issue ration cards, sanction water connections | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 15: Despite being in the opposition, the National Conference seems to be in the power, as its workers are making money in the Valley. There are reports that in various areas, NC workers are issuing ration cards and even sanction water connections. There are erstwhile municipal councillors belonging to the NC who continue to rule the roost here and people in droves have to seek their approval before availing any services from the Government. Last elections for local bodies in the State were held in 2005 and the term for these elections ended after five years. Ironically, the NC former councillors continue to use their official seals in brazen violation of law, hence making a mockery of the system. For example, a former councillor of ward No. 65 in Srinagar, namely Mohammad Maqbool, is issuing ration cards signed and stamped by him. According to sources, Maqbool is also issuing water connections to the households. "The authorities ask us to get the confirmation from the councillor then only they issue the water connections," said a resident. He said they had apprised the authorities about such gross violation of the laws but to no avail |
