The market was inaugurated amid much fanfare by then Minister for Horticulture Sham Lal Sharma in the presence of minister Javed Ahmad Dar, then MP Lal Singh and former MLA Kathua Charanjeet Singh on January 2, 2013. The local residents had hoped they would be benefited with the launching of the market. Their hopes were, however, dashed soon. Many crore rupees were spent on construction of three sheds, bathrooms, Ayush Research Centres, guard rooms, administrative blocks, but market is yet to get a green signal from the Horticulture Department and Municipal Committee Kathua. RK Bhandari, a social worker, said the Horticulture Department had ignored locals and allotted the land for shops to outsider businessmen. Suresh Kumar, another local worker, said the market would have opened job avenues for unemployed youths who have taken to drug. Another local resident Jai Singh said they have decided to launch an agitation to press for opening of the fruit and vegetable market without further delay. |
