Tobacco control campaign organized | | | Early Times Report
Poonch, Sept 21: Government of Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with Dr. NC Prabhakar Resource Person for the International Union against Tuberculosis organized anti tobacco campaign here today. On this occasion, SSP Poonch was the Chief Guest and Chief Medical Officer Poonch presided over the function. According to press release, India is at No. 3 in the production of Tobacco products and 2nd as Consumer in Tobacco products in whole of the world. Jammu and Kashmir has high incidence of smoking and J&K is also becoming the Lung Cancer Capital of India due to increased smoking prevalence across all the section of the society. 26.6% population in Jammu & Kashmir uses tobacco products in one or the other form. 3.8% population in J&K smokes bidis while 8% use smokeless tobacco products. Cigarette use prevalence in J&K is 12 percent, almost double the nationwide prevalence of 5.7 percent. The highest proportion of adults (67.9 percent) exposed to tobacco smoke in officers is in J&K and the lowest (15.4 percent) in Chandigarh. This was revealed by Dr. N. C. Prabhakar. Similar function was held at Rajouri where the Deputy Commissioner Shabir Ahmed Bhat was the Chief Guest and the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Chaman Bhasin presided over the function. |
