Tarigami wants Kulgam to come up as model district for RTI implementation | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 12: MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami today said that he would like to see Kulgam district to come up as a model district with regard to implementation of Right to Information (RTI) Act particularly with respect to proactive disclosure of information of use and importance to the residents. The MLA Kulgam promised support including resource support from his MLA fund in order to make the vision of transparency and accountability in the district administration come true in the real sense and that too in near future. He said the RTI Act is not just any other law, but the very essence of good governance. "In order to improve the system, awareness of RTI law among the people of Jammu & Kashmir is vital," said Tarigami while delivering the Presidential address at the District level RTI workshop. The workshop was jointly organized by Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), an international human rights non-government organization based in Delhi in collaboration with Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement (JKRTIM) in Kulgam. About 200 representatives of government including PIOs and appellate authorities and social activists, student activists, eminent citizens and youth participated in the workshop. Inaugurating the workshop, G R Sufi, State Chief Information Commissioner, Jammu & Kashmir State Information Commission expressed his gratitude to JKRTIM, CHRI and MLA Kulgam for playing an effective role in drafting and pushing for the effective implementation of RTI law in the State. Sufi stressed upon the need for spreading awareness about the RTI Act, so as to bring more transparency and accountability in government. Co-conveners of the National Campaign for People's Right to Information (NCPRI) Venkatesh Nayak and Dr. Sheikh Ghulam Rasool familiarized the participants with the procedures for accessing information under the Jammu & Kashmir RTI Act. They also responded to several queries raised by participants with regard to drafting of RTI applications in relation to developmental and governance issues. The workshop also focused on addressing the obstacles that people face in their attempt to exercise their right to access and raising awareness on the value of access to information to the women and other marginalized groups across valley. |
